Friends: Peter Mortis – Best Friend/Roommate – Best friend since Cub Scout days. Acquaintances: Pending Enemies: Pending Pets: N/a | Ferdinand was known most of his life as a charmer. He could usually wiggle his way out of anything with his friendly demeanor and big blue eyes. This contributed to a cocky streak in the man that sometimes gets a bit out of hand. His closest friends like to remind him that nobody likes a narcissist, and deep down, that’s not who he is. But getting away with enough things in the past has made him a little full of himself from time to time. For the most part, Ferdie is pretty good-natured. And with a name like “Ferdinand,” he doesn’t really have a choice. It’s either be good-natured, or constantly be pissed off. He chooses the former. He’s friendly to everybody at first, but piss him off once, and odds are good, you’re done. He tends to be slightly vain about his appearance, only wearing expensive clothes, and taking good care of himself, though not quite to the point of “metro.” When he’s with friends and family, he “lets his hair down” so to speak, becoming very laid-back and a constant joker. At work, however, he’s very focused. Change is tough on Ferdie, as evidenced by the fact that he lives with his best friend from Cub Scouts. He’s never been able to let go of friends. He still lives in the general vicinity of his friends from childhood and family. Dealing with conflict is something he’s good at, which comes in handy in the restaurant business. He can usually diffuse a situation with a dissatisfied customer quickly and efficiently, and the same goes for his friends and family. He hates fighting, and will always try to find a way around it if he can. When problems do arise beyond the realm of his ability to charm his way out of them, he generally doesn’t handle them well. He tends to try to ignore them. When it comes to the point that he can no longer hide from them, he tends to become angry, sometimes even to the point of belligerence. Ferdie generally keeps a pretty even temper, but when he’s pushed to his breaking point (or out of cigarettes), watch out! His biggest soft spot is for his grandmother on his mom’s side. “Granny Danny,” as he calls her, was the grandma who always had cookies and milk ready when her grandchildren came to visit, spoiling their supper be darned, and Ferdie would do anything for the old lady. |
history | |
Some people wonder where Ferdie got such 2 such odd names as “Ferdinand Asher.” The story is that his mother, a historian specializing in Spanish history, wanted to name him after the beloved “Catholic Monarchs.” Before he was born, she’d chosen the name “Ferdinand Charles” for a boy and “Isabela Catherine” for a girl. Her husband, a devout Catholic, preferred the names of biblical characters and saints. He’d chosen “Asher Benjamin” for a boy and “Melanie Elisabeth” for a girl. Instead of choosing one of the names or the other, Ferdie’s parents settled on a cross between the two. When he was born, they named him Ferdinand Asher, though his dad insisted he be called “Asher” at first. His mother firmly resisted, and called him Ferdinand until finally, his father gave in, calling his son “Ferdie” for short. His mother never got the daughter she’d wanted, so she did her best with what she had. She always put him in the best clothes, and he picked up an expensive taste in fashion early on. She also taught him to cook gourmet meals. His father feared that he would become a “pansy,” and tried desperately to introduce his son to the world of sports, hunting, fishing, and the like. Ferdie did enjoy tossing the football around with his dad, but never took to hunting or fishing. He did, however, pick up a love for working out early on. It was in his early years, as a Cub Scout, that he met his best friend, Peter Mortis. The two were nearly inseparable. Ferdie grew very close to a few friends at a young age, since he had no brothers or sisters. The boy enjoyed high school, and was pretty popular. He ran track and cross-country, and made fair grades in most of his subjects. Ironically enough, though his mother was a historian, and he was named for a historical monarch, history was his weakest subject. He was good at business classes and home ec, which his dad allowed him to take only when Ferdie insisted he wanted to take it for the chance to be surrounded by girls. He and Peter remained best friends through high school, and even through college, though Peter was in New Orleans, and Ferdie in Baton Rouge, at the Louisiana Culinary Institute. It was in college that Ferdie picked up his nicotine habit. After school, Ferdie moved to New Orleans to work in the booming restaurant business there. He quickly moved up to the ranks of restaurant management in a gourmet seafood restaurant called “Sailor’s Tails,” but would eventually like to open a restaurant of his own. Ferdie was surprised when his roommate began sprouting wings and glowing, but began to wonder if Peter isn’t the only one in the apartment changing, when touching certain objects began to bring on strange visions that he couldn’t explain. Right now, he’s trying to figure out just what the hell is going on. | |
